From Verdun we continue upstream on the canalized Meuse, now called the Canal de la Meuse ('Canal de l'Est'). We spend the night in small, interesting towns such as Saint Mihiel with its famous medieval monastery library, Commercy with its large castle complex or Toul with its famous cathedral. The city of Nancy is particularly worth seeing with its numerous museums and the Place Stanilas, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After Nancy we have then reached the highest point of the tour. From here it goes through numerous small locks down through the Vosges into the Rhine Valley. Before that, another height difference of 45 m has to be overcome with the Arzviller boat lift. This 'inclined ship elevator', a construction that is unique in the world, replaces 17 locks that previously had to be passed through in a time-consuming 'manual' process. The journey of this section ends in the famous metropolis of Strasbourg with its cathedral and the 'Petite France' district, which is particularly worth seeing.
